What is an avatar and how do you cutomise it?
Firstly if you're new to Second Life (SL) and don't know what an avatar is, then welcome and let me show you.
An avatar is a 3D character that you use to potray yourself in second life. It's kind of as if sims and Imvu had a hybrid love child. Both of those but better. You use it to socialise, explore and experess yourself. When you first start SL you'll be given a choice of the basic standard Avatars (avis), it may look like this.
They're not all that cute and not very versatile or inclusive either. This is where avatar customisation comes in. It doesn't really matter which of these premade characters you pick, as you more than likely will be changing it anyway. Avatar customisation is the freedom to create whoever you want to be. Tweak your character to perfection with the use of shapes, skins, hairs and accesories, you name it. You could make yourself an alien if you really wanted to, why the hell not?
I've had a few avatars myself,' I've gone through at least 9 before finally finding one I love with the help of a custom skin I got from Xiolist. I'll show you my old avis down below.

So you see, you can become whatever and whoever you want in second life. It may be trial and error at first (as you can see from my first few avis) but there are such such a wide variety of shapes, heads, bodies and skins to help you look and be how you want to be.
I know starting out can be little confusing, so information on how you can get help, get started, where to find good quality skins and shapes will be provided. I hope you enjoy your stay at secondlife. Don't let social media get to you, do you and do what you came here to do. Which is to have fun.
